I fell asleep beside you in the tomb
and when I woke up
you were gone
and not gone.
I looked up,
and there you were
looking down at me
and smiling.
“Good morning, my Beloved,”
you said as if
it wasn’t the most famous morning
in the history of the world.
I jumped up
and hugged you.
“Gandalf! I thought you were dead.
But then I thought I was dead myself.
Is everything sad going to come untrue?”
–Samwise Gamgee, Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkien
